The Fog of Success: How to Gain True Clarity When You Don't Know What's Next
If I asked you right now to describe—with absolute honesty—what you want your life, career, and daily energy to look like three years from today, what would you say?
If your mind instantly goes blank, or if you feel a quiet wave of anxiety because you honestly have no idea, I want you to know something: you are not broken, and you are not alone.
In my coaching practice at reSpark KC, the most common starting point for high-achieving professionals isn't a lack of ambition—it is a total, suffocating lack of clarity.
You’ve spent years becoming excellent at managing external expectations, family logistics, and professional demands. But somewhere along the way, in the noise of running on autopilot, your internal compass went quiet. You know you aren't fully satisfied where you are, but you have zero awareness of what would actually make you feel fulfilled.
And when you don't know what you want, you fall into a very specific, quiet trap.
The Trap: From Lack of Awareness to "Deferred Resolution"
Before I founded reSpark KC, my career was built in corporate America helping organizations identify and manage risk. In that world, there is a formal term used during audits when a glaring vulnerability is identified: Deferred Resolution.
Deferred resolution happens when an organization acknowledges an issue exists, but because figuring out the solution feels complex or uncomfortable, leadership decides to file it away and take zero action.
When you live in the fog of not knowing what you want, deferred resolution becomes your default setting.
You sense that your current role or routine isn’t sustainable.
But because you lack clarity on what the alternative looks like, the thought of changing anything feels overwhelming.
So, you file your own life under deferred resolution. You wake up, push through another week, and hope that clarity will magically strike you one day.
By late 2023, following a profound personal awakening and watching my own "house of cards" fall apart, I realized I was living in my own deferred resolution. I was helping corporations manage risk while ignoring the fact that I had lost clarity on my own life's purpose.
I decided it was time for my own "decision moment." I exited corporate America to take my talents directly to the people—helping individuals cut through the fog, rebuild self-awareness, and stop deferring their lives.
Step 1: Cutting Through the Fog with the Ikigai Framework
You cannot build a future you haven't named. To move out of confusion and into clarity, you need a structured visual framework that strips away the noise and helps you look at your life objectively.
This is why I use the Ikigai framework.
Originating from Okinawa, Japan, Ikigai (pronounced ee-key-guy) translates to "a reason for being." It represents the quiet, daily spark that gives your life direction.
Instead of asking you to invent a brand-new life out of thin air, Ikigai breaks clarity down into four tangible, digestible pillars:
What You Love: Your intrinsic joys, passions, and what makes you lose track of time.
What You Are Good At: Your natural strengths, talents, and developed skills.
What The World Needs: How your gifts can serve your family, community, or society.
What You Can Be Paid For: Your economic sustainability and career reality.
Step 2: Decoding Your Current "Gap State"
When you lack clarity, it’s usually because one or two of these circles have been completely sidelined. By looking at where the circles don't overlap, you suddenly gain immediate awareness of why you feel untethered:
Feeling Comfortable, but Empty: You have skill and income (Profession), but you’ve lost touch with joy and impact. Life feels predictable, but empty.
Happy and Fulfilled, but No Wealth: You have passion and impact, but lack economic sustainability. You feel purposeful but constantly strained.
Excited and Self-Approved, but Uncertain: You have purpose and income, but lack confidence in your mastery, leading to imposter syndrome.
Feeling Useless, but Also Satisfied: You have passion and skill, but miss contribution and real-world connection. It feels like an isolated hobby.
Seeing these states written down turns a vague, overwhelming feeling of "I don't know what I want" into clean, actionable data.
Finding Your Center & Stepping Into Action
The Golden Rule of Purpose: Your Ikigai is not something you force into existence through hustle or ambition. It exists at the intersection of who you naturally are, what brings you joy, and how you choose to contribute to the world around you.
When you step out of the fog and locate your center, everything shifts:
Identity Clarity: You regain a clear sense of who you are beyond your job title or daily to-do list.
Purposeful Focus: You gain clear criteria for deciding what opportunities deserve your energy and what boundaries to set.
Actionable Vision: You replace deferred resolution with a unified roadmap for your next chapter.
Stop Waiting for Clarity to Magically Appear
Clarity isn't something you passively wait for—it is something you actively cultivate. You do not have to stay stuck in the fog or accept deferred resolution as a lifestyle.
If you are ready to rediscover what you actually want and build a life aligned with your true gifts, the Ikigai Alignment Guide is built to help you find your center.
