The Tide Pool: A Somatic Metaphor for Identity, Boundaries, and Energy Exchange
If you were to look at my mental health "resume," you might assume I am a clinician.
Over the past 15 years, my journey has involved working with a dozen different therapists. I spent two months in an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) focused on Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). I navigated the complexities of psychiatric medications for a decade and a half. Seeking somatic relief, I invested in EMDR, Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS).
I share this to make one thing absolutely clear: I have a profound, hard-won respect for the clinical mental health field. It kept me alive. But I also know its limits.
Despite the immense time and energy I invested in traditional modalities, I eventually hit a wall. It wasn't until I was introduced to Reiki that I experienced a transformation that finally bridged the gap between what I knew in my head and what I could actually execute in my life.
The Treatment-to-Execution Gap
If you are a high-achieving professional, you are likely highly analytical. When you enter a clinical setting, you perform incredibly well. You are adept at analyzing your trauma and intellectualizing your problems.
But understanding the map is not the same as driving the car.
You can experience a profound breakthrough in the clinic hour, only to return home and find an invisible wall of resistance blocking you from doing the work. Your intellect understands the assignment, but your body—stuck in functional freeze and disconnected from internal energy cues—refuses to cooperate.
The Tide Pool: Moving from Knowing to Feeling
For years, I could intellectualize my pain, but I couldn't process it. A perfect example was boundary management. My therapists gave me the tools, but the boundaries I tried to build kept failing because I did not comprehend the energetic exchange happening in my body.
During my first Reiki session, I saw a vivid mental image of myself as a tide pool sitting next to a vast ocean. The tide pool represented my core identity. The walls represented my structural boundaries. The water inside represented my energy, while the ocean was the external world.
When the ocean tide comes in, external water washes over the walls, no matter how well-constructed those boundaries are. But a healthy tide pool is able to restore its own water level once the tide inevitably lowers. It settles.
Therapy had helped me build the walls of the tide pool (the intellect). But Reiki allowed me to actually feel the water.
Expanding the Window of Tolerance
In clinical terms, Reiki provided the somatic regulation my nervous system desperately needed to expand my Window of Tolerance.
Talk therapy was pushing me to process heavy cognitive insights, but my nervous system wasn't regulated enough to hold them.
Reiki taught my body how to settle after the tide rolled out, restoring my interoceptive awareness so I could differentiate my own energy from the stress of my surroundings.
Top-Down Meets Bottom-Up: A Model for Parallel Care
Reiki does not replace psychotherapy; it acts as the necessary somatic scaffolding to support it.
When a client is too dysregulated to make progress, traditional methods plateau. This is where a structured, bottom-up parallel care model becomes essential. By addressing the nervous system directly, we create the physical safety required for cognitive breakthroughs to finally take root.
At reSpark KC, we don't operate in a silo. Working under a signed Release of Information (ROI), we maintain a collaborative feedback loop with your primary therapist. We bridge the energetic with the empirical—often seeing this work translate directly into measurable physiological shifts, such as improved sleep metrics, increased Heart Rate Variability (HRV), and a reduction in inter-session dissociation.
If you are a client tired of just "understanding" your burnout, I invite you to book a session. And if you are a clinician looking for a collaborative, accountable parallel care partner to help your clients operationalize your clinical insights, let's connect.
